I painted many abstracts in my twenties using thick black felt tipped pens on paper or oil paint on 6 x 4 foot board. Almost always at night after a day of madness in an ad agency. The shapes turned into huge black forms which seemed to dominate an imagined landscape, giving me feeling of Sentinels or Guardians. Guarding what? I had no idea. Eventually I took most of the work into the garden and burnt it.
Looking recently at the few remaining images I have, I found they resonated with me. We humans need to protect our habitat and perhaps also guard against some of our own basic instincts.
